Free Moon Sign Calculator (Chandra Rashi)

Use this Moon Sign Calculator to explore your Chandra Rashi, the Moon sign used in traditional Vedic astrology. Enter your birth date, exact local birth time and the time zone that applied at your birth. The calculator displays the Moon sign, its traditional ruler, Nakshatra, Nakshatra Lord, Pada and related lunar-position details.

Before calculating: check your birth record and select the correct time zone. The result depends on the details you enter and the calculation conventions used by the tool.

How to Use the Moon Sign Calculator

  1. Birth date: Enter the date in DD/MM/YYYY format.
  2. Birth time: Enter the recorded local time in the displayed AM/PM format.
  3. Birthplace: Enter the city or place associated with your birth record.
  4. Time zone: Select the applicable time zone from the available list. If your location or historical time-zone rule is not represented accurately, the result may differ.
  5. Calculate: Submit the form and review the result. Correct any validation message and check your details if the result seems unexpected.

What Does the Result Show?

  • Moon Sign (Chandra Rashi): The sidereal zodiac sign occupied by the calculated Moon position.
  • Rashi Lord: The traditional planetary ruler associated with that sign.
  • Nakshatra: The lunar mansion containing the Moon’s calculated sidereal position.
  • Nakshatra Lord: The traditional ruler assigned to that Nakshatra.
  • Pada: One of the four subdivisions of the Nakshatra.
  • Moon position and degree: The calculated sidereal position and its degree within the sign.
  • Lahiri ayanamsa: The sidereal correction applied by the calculation engine.
  • UTC birth time: The entered local date and time converted to Coordinated Universal Time.

How Is Chandra Rashi Calculated?

The tool validates the supplied date and time, interprets them in the selected time zone, and converts the local birth time to UTC. It then calculates the Moon’s geocentric longitude, applies a Lahiri-based sidereal conversion, and uses the resulting position to identify the Rashi, Nakshatra and Pada.

The zodiac contains 12 signs of 30 degrees each. In the traditional Nakshatra system, the zodiac is divided into 27 sections of 13 degrees and 20 minutes each, with four Padas in every Nakshatra. The calculator’s engine uses an approximate Lahiri ayanamsa, so results may differ from software using a more precise ephemeris or a different calculation convention.

Why Birth Time and Time Zone Matter

A time-zone error changes the UTC time used in the calculation and can change the calculated Moon position. A small difference may matter particularly when the Moon is close to a sign, Nakshatra or Pada boundary. Use the most reliable birth time available and interpret boundary cases cautiously.

The birthplace is recorded as part of the input, but this tool’s stated calculation uses the Moon’s geocentric longitude. Do not assume that entering a place name independently verifies the time zone or adjusts the calculation for local coordinates.

Moon Sign and Sun Sign: What Is the Difference?

In popular Western astrology, the term “Sun sign” usually refers to the zodiac sign associated with the Sun’s position. A Moon sign refers to the Moon’s position. In Vedic astrology, Chandra Rashi generally refers to the Moon’s sign in a sidereal zodiac. These terms describe different positions and calculation conventions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
